September Newsletter Volume 1, Edition 8
From the Manager’s Desk
Is summer almost over already? It seems I was just talking about spring and summer whites and roses, and now it’s back to school and all things pumpkin spice! Ha! It’s hard to believe that a year ago, I started my journey with Hicks Fine Wines! Although the store was not yet open, I was busy meeting with sales reps, tasting wines, and putting together a starting inventory. We started out with about 750 SKU’s, and now, well above one thousand SKU’s! Needless to say, we are growing, and for those of you making regular appearances at the store, know that we are always looking to bring in new product and try new things! (Stay tuned for a final taste count!) I for one, am looking forward to the fall season and a chance to bring all of you some perfect pairing wines for Thanksgiving turkeys and hams! Not only is it pumpkin season for the rest of the world, no exceptions here either! Watch for new pumpkin beers to arrive on the shelf in the next few weeks!
Bar Pours are BACK! Don’t miss the first one with Susan Giacomin of Winequest in a Double Feature September 11 & 12. As always, the website is a good resource to check dates for tastings and bar pours. Some dates just may not make it into the newsletter and you wouldn’t want to miss that tasting would you, and there are some GREAT ones coming down the pipe you will NOT want to miss!

For the Collector…
2010 John Duval “Eligo” Shiraz
From the Penfolds Winemaker of 29 years, John branched out on his own, not veering from quality fruit to make this stunning Shiraz, highlighting the great fruit from the Barossa. Here is deep purple with blackberry, liquorice and chocolate on the nose, followed by a silky-smooth mouth feel of black fruits, cedar and spice. The finish is long and lingering and this wine would be even better in a few years time! If you like Penfolds, try some of John Duval’s wines and you surely won’t be disappointed!
2013 Ken Wright Shea Vineyards Pinot Noirs
With Oregon boasting a terroir similar to Burgundy, it’s Pinot Noirs are gaining a reputation for being soft, supple and long lived. From Ken Wright Cellars, it’s a “hands off” approach to winemaking. This is a complex wine that showcases the lovely fruit with hints of earth and spice. Hold this for 10 years in your cellar and you won’t be disappointed.
2010 Clos de Brusquieres Chateauneuf-du-Pape
Although there are 13 allowable grapes in a CdP, most are “classic” GSM and these are no exception. This wine comprises 60% Grenache, 30% Syrah and 10% Mourvedre. A great vintage and certainly a keeper in your cellar. The price is great too!
(please see the website for pictures of these wines)
As you can see, lots happening in the next few months here at Hicks Fine Wines! We are excited to go through our first fall here at the store, and looking forward to meeting your needs through the fall months, through Thanksgiving and into Christmas! We look forward to seeing you! Cheers!
