From the Manager’s Desk

Wow, as I write this, it’s only a few days before the New Year, and we turn our calendars over to 2017. As I reflect upon the past year, I realize it was difficult for many, and in some ways, challenging for us here also. But, there’s always that light at the end of the tunnel, and we can certainly see it shining brighter now! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your loyalty and patronage not only during the month of December, but throughout all of last year also! We truly appreciate all our customers here at the store and we had fun serving you! January is typically slow in wine retail, but I’m sure we will still see many of you around. Store tastings will resume in February along with our bar pours by reps. If you are interested in a private tasting, feel free to give us a call at the store to discuss (minimum 8 people). Continue to check the website calendar under the Events tab for tastings and for future events! All the best to everyone in 2017 and may this year be a healthy and prosperous one! Salute!

Langmeil Family Wines Tasting – Tuesday, September 13, 7 pm – Yes, a tasting on a night other than THURSDAY! I am pleased to announce a very special guest! James Lidner from Langmeil Family Wineries will be here to present 6-7 wines from their family winery. One of the oldest vineyards in the valley founded in 1842, it was bought by the Lidner family in 1996, along with another partner. In 2011, the Lidner family, along with sons Paul and James, bought it outright to ensure the success and lineage of this winery for years to come. These are some of the oldest vines in the valley and trust me, you won’t want to miss out on tasting these spectacular wines from the Barossa. There are only 16 spots available for this free exclusive tasting, so first come, first served to reserve your spot! Call or email the store to reserve your spot TODAY!

From the Manager’s Desk
Is summer almost over already?  It seems I was just talking about spring and summer whites and roses, and now it’s back to school and all things pumpkin spice!  Ha!  It’s hard to believe that a year ago, I started my journey with Hicks Fine Wines!  Although the store was not yet open, I was busy meeting with sales reps, tasting wines, and putting together a starting inventory. We started out with about 750 SKU’s, and now, well above one thousand SKU’s! Needless to say, we are growing, and for those of you making regular appearances at the store, know that we are always looking to bring in new product and try new things! (Stay tuned for a final taste count!) I for one, am looking forward to the fall season and a chance to bring all of you some perfect pairing wines for Thanksgiving turkeys and hams! Not only is it pumpkin season for the rest of the world, no exceptions here either! Watch for new pumpkin beers to arrive on the shelf in the next few weeks!
Bar Pours are BACK!  Don’t miss the first one with Susan Giacomin of Winequest in a Double Feature September 11 & 12. As always, the website is a good resource to check dates for tastings and bar pours. Some dates just may not make it into the newsletter and you wouldn’t want to miss that tasting would you, and there are some GREAT ones coming down the pipe you will NOT want to miss!

For the Collector…
2010 John Duval “Eligo” Shiraz
From the Penfolds Winemaker of 29 years, John branched out on his own, not veering from quality fruit to make this stunning Shiraz, highlighting the great fruit from the Barossa. Here is deep purple with blackberry, liquorice and chocolate on the nose, followed by a silky-smooth mouth feel of black fruits, cedar and spice.  The finish is long and lingering and this wine would be even better in a few years time!  If you like Penfolds, try some of John Duval’s wines and you surely won’t be disappointed!
2013 Ken Wright Shea Vineyards Pinot Noirs
With Oregon boasting a terroir similar to Burgundy, it’s Pinot Noirs are gaining a reputation for being soft, supple and long lived.  From Ken Wright Cellars, it’s a “hands off” approach to winemaking.  This is a complex wine that showcases the lovely fruit with hints of earth and spice. Hold this for 10 years in your cellar and you won’t be disappointed.
2010 Clos de Brusquieres Chateauneuf-du-Pape
Although there are 13 allowable grapes in a CdP, most are “classic” GSM and these are no exception.  This wine comprises 60% Grenache, 30% Syrah and 10% Mourvedre. A great vintage and certainly a keeper in your cellar.  The price is great too!
(please see the website for pictures of these wines)
As you can see, lots happening in the next few months here at Hicks Fine Wines!  We are excited to go through our first fall here at the store, and looking forward to meeting your needs through the fall months, through Thanksgiving and into Christmas!  We look forward to seeing you!  Cheers!

From the Manager’s Desk…
Happy Canada Day!  I dare say summer has indeed arrived! I personally love the hot weather, and with temperatures soaring into the mid-30’s, folks flock to outdoor pools, splash parks and our Alberta lakes to cool off and enjoy all the summer has to offer! And speaking of offer…cool off with our selection of beers and ciders and chilled wine from the cooler! With blonde ales, wheat and fruit beers, you’re sure to find something cool and refreshing to wet your palate with! We recently changed up our whites in the cooler and several of our rosés are currently chilling as well!  If you’ve chosen a rosé to purchase, and you want one chilled, just ask one of the staff and we will see if we have it in the back cooler.  Whatever you’re looking for, please ask myself, Doug or one of the staff and we would be happy to point out some excellent selections for whatever suits your occasion!  I don’t know about you, but I’m looking forward to some lazy days of sunshine (and the rain never hurts either!) Thank you to everyone who has come out to support our major events, formal sit-down tastings and bar pours! Cheers!

For the Collector
Some absolutely fabulous products here for cellaring!
Collector July 22010 Chateau Lynch Bages – Pauillac
From the stellar vintage of 2010, this fabulous 5th growth Bordeaux sits among some of the most famous Bordeaux wines (due to its location and the fact that it’s been heralded as good as a 2nd growth); and the wine’s distinctive flavours among Paulliacs greatest. It combines structure, finesse and elegance, offering generous aromas in its youth and developing deeper complexities with age. The blend is 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot.  According to the owner, Jean-Michel Cazas, “2010 Lynch-Bages has all the hallmarks of a very great vintage. It may appear premature to describe it in detail, but its deep colour, complexity, intense fruit, freshness, and tannic density already indicate enormous potential.” Only 2 bottles in store. You may want to leap at the chance to get one or it will be gone! Drink now (decant first though) to 2035.
Collector July 3 2010 Chateau Haut-Bailly – Pessac-Leognan
Calling this wine a “double triumph”, nobody ever thought the 2010 could come close to 2009, but it certainly did!  This blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc has the great potential to overshadow the great first growth Haut-Brion. Unbelievable! With ripe tannins and black fruit, this wine may not be quite ready, but with time, could be a serious wow factor. 6 bottles in store. With a 97 point rating, Drink now or cellar until 2020-2040.
Collector July12011 M. Chapoutier L’Ermite Ermitage- Rhone Valley
I was able to taste this fabulous 100% Syrah recently, and I felt unbelievably special to be part of this Selecciones Parcellaires tasting. I found out that if it says Ermitage on the label, it is from a specific small plot, whereasHermitage is from the whole appellation itself. So, if you see Ermitage, you know it’s got to be a special wine! Situated at the top of Hermitage hill, next to a chapel, is a place called Ermite. The vines are 80 years old, grown on granite soil. Only free run juice is used with a long fermentation to ensure the tannins are rich and smooth. Full of rich black fruits, spices and peppery overtones, this wine will truly be something special in years to come. According to the vintage, this wine has potential to age for 30-60 years. Wow…I could be dead before this wine reaches it’s fullest potential! Ha! Only 3 bottles  in store.
